Unhappy Mysql 5

Hi

I have just installed Mepis6 on my second drive and have alsi installed Mysql 5. I have set everything up so that mysql is installed at boot up.

Previously when using Suse mysql would create a socket file "mysql.sock" in /var/lib/mysql. Now it is supposed to create a socket file "mysqld.sock' under /var/run/mysqld. My problem is that the socket file is not created and therefore I am unable to access the databases. The /var/run/mysqld directory
is empty.

Has anyone come across this problem and can help me resolve it?

Mysql 5

I have finally got this working. For some strange reason as a user and doing "su" it would not create the mysqld.sock file. I locked in as root ran mysqld_safe and low and behold the sock.file was created. Logging in again as a user the sock file was still there and I can now access my database.

Why I had to do this is a mystery as usually when I used previously used mysql(v 4.2) as root I got dire warning messages.

Anyway hope this may help somebody else.
