Multiple VSFTPD's running problem

I use vsftpd and after having another issue where I couldn't login as myself which I seem to have fixed, I now have an issue where vsftpd just keeps spawning a new session so that ia now have about 40 running. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening. Thanks
