Migrating NFS service to Linux

Hello,

I'm currently working on moving the NFS service from a Solaris 7 box to a RHEL 5.x box. The NFS server is almost holding approximately 1 terabyte of information which will be transferred using rsync.

I was wondering if someone can provide me with some information on what is the best way to run this transition smoothly.

Thanks in advanced.

Not sure if there is a 'best' way to do it. Using rsync to copy the information is a good thing, if you expect things to be updated/changed frequently. If you already have a set downtime window, I'd personally stop the services and do a cold copy, then 'freeze' the disk on the Solaris box (mount it read-only), to make sure you've got a known good source with no updates.

After that, it's fairly straightforward to set up NFS, providing you're not doing anything fancy with authentication, users, etc. Red Hat support can assist you with this, since you're using RHEL.

Concur with TB0ne; you may find this link useful for ref http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_boo...ion/index.html
Just remember that the same uids/gids have to exist on both sides of the NFS cxn.

If you have alot of files Rsync might not do the trick.
If you use it with 100 000 of files it will probably take alot of time.
