Hi!

I would really appreciate any hint how to tackle the following

I recently installed a new ubuntu server on a blank sata disk, previously it was running on an ide disk in the same machine.
In this machine sits a 4 disk raid5 array.
I now wish to activate this array in the new installation.
Unfortunately the drive names changed. So, I changed mdadm.conf accordingly.
However, it doesnt work:
When I examine the drives, it reports sda1,sdb1,sdd1,sdf1 having valid superblocks, but IN the superblock the array is described as sdc1,sdd1,sde1,sdf1

When I first booted the new installation, the info in the superblocks corresponded with the drive naming(cdef) and also managed to assemble and mount manually.

So two questions:
- where is the drive naming configured (is this done by grub2 ?) The only info i found was regarding grub, but device.map seems to be gone.
- how to get the naming consistent with the superblock info?

Hm.

For whatever reason another examine on /dev/sd* brought up the old config sda1-sdd1, I put it into /etc/mdadm.conf, rebooted and it worked ...

So, I want to use this space for forum praises> This forum rocks!

hi, i am not so good in linux, i know the basics. I have a problem with our centos 2.6 server RAID 5, the previous administrator cannot be located after he resigned. We dont have the password for root, and the GRUB password. How can we reset the root password?

While this has almost no relation to my post, I can tell you what I did in a similar situation: Boot Linux from a CD or USBStick, mount the systemdrive and remove the password file. Upon next boot from the original systemdrive, it should ask for a new root pw.

I did this several years ago and linux system security policies might have changed significantly in the meantime. I strongly recommend a websearch before trying this!!
