Talking LTSP Server booting another OS

I am going to set up a LTSP (ubuntu 9.10) Server.

Now it looks like there is a directory that is something like /opt/ltsp/i386/....... where the LTSP Client files are kept.

Now my question is if i was to place in a Distor like Puppy in there that i could then boot Puppy using the LTSP / PXE on to the Terminals.

The reason i am asking this is that i was hoping to only get over somthing like Browser Pup with Open-office using the Puppyeee interface in there, And that all i need. I think i might have to set up this puppy 1st but that's not that bad to do?

Is this poss? Your comments please

Something like this is possible, since the kernel that is passed to the LTSP clients is located where you say, however it's probably a non-trivial task, simply because of the amount of scripts that would need to be changed. What you would need to do is read up on the LTSP project, and perhaps look at the documentation for the various distros that have implemented LTSP. Take a look at this: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawik..._Documentation as a starting point, there is some information given on a link on the previous page, here it is: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawik...ntegratingLtsp. Perhaps looking at using puppy as your distro of choice, and only installing the required applications.

Another option is to change the installed base of applications in a standard Ubuntu install of LTSP. For more info, look here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP, and here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ub...UpdatingChroot. The second link here talks about updating, but it's also the place you may wish to install or remove the packages that you want on the clients.

thank you irishbitte for posting back on this. i think i might have to pass my LPI part 1 and 2 before i give this a try. But it dose sound like fun to do.

I have taken on board what you have said here and i have started looking at the links, and i think this would be a good way to learn about linux. (sad i know)

Well, for what it's worth, I learned lots about linux the first time I setup an LTSP server. It's interesting, because it takes a bit to wrap the brain around what's actually happening! I say jump in, but try a vanilla ubuntu LTSP server first, then look later at puppy. Anyhow, enjoy it!
