I want to put in the IDE cable a second HD, Ubuntu 7.04 server
first connecter is the maxtor 320Gb as slave, /dev/sdb1, second connector at the cable a samsung 320 Gb but it didn't exept it, tried as slave or master.
By jumper on master the server wants to try to boot from the master (samsung) disk.
Both slave, wil not exept
If the Maxtor is already slave then you have two options:
1) Change it to master and have the Samsung as slave - this will probably mess up the bootloader on the Maxtor anyway and it will refuse to boot until you fix it.
2) Put the Samsung as master and change the boot options in the BIOS/bootloader to boot from the slave (Maxtor).
You can't have both as slave (obviously) or both as master, so you have to decide. BIOS's tend to want to boot off the master or first detected disk (i.e. your Maxtor) but this is usually a BIOS option. Who installed the first disk in the machine as a slave?
Also, are you seriously telling me that you're running an Ubuntu server and can't figure out legacy IDE booting? I do hope it's not inside a company and that we're talking about a home server.
Distribution: Switched to regualr Ubuntu, because I don't like KDE4, at all. Looks like vista on crack.....

Try setting the jumper to "cs" which stands for Cable Select, then you can swap them around later if you have to and won't have to worry about which cable for which drive. The next thing to do would be to get into the bios and check and see if the bios has recognised the drive. If it hasn't, the bios could be funky, (I've had a few that were weird like that.), next, you might have a bad cable. If you have another laying around you could swap them out and test that. If you still can't get it to work, you could try getting a second cable and trying it on the other ide port.
Good luck with that...let us know how it turned out...
David
P.S. and hey ledow, it's the guys first post, and it doesn't sound like English is his first language, not everyone is a hardware guru. Everyone has to learn sometime, so don't hassle him. He'll get it figured out, by the sounds of it it's a home server he's using to learn with. Chill out man. Just be glad he's not asking us how to set up windows home server 2008.
If you need a little more of a hand macme you can IM if you have a yahoo IM. I use vagabondgambler.....
Good luck.....
OH, and changing your jumper settings and drive order might affect which drive the computer is trying to boot from first, you can usually change this in the bios. Just reply back here if you need a hand with that.....
Both maxtor and samsung IDE are just for storage.....
There are 2 IDE ports on the mainboard, 1 is DVD player and 1 i want to put both HD on.
English is not my mother tongue, I'm from holland

Each IDE port connects to a cable, which can hold 2 devices, either 2 hard drives, 2 cdrom drives, or one of each. The device on the very end of the cable is the master, the device between the master and the motherboard is the slave. So your 2 IDE ports can support 4 devices, you just have to have them defined correctly with the bios, and have the jumpers set correctly.
