id %NISUSER%" says: "id: %NISUSER%: unknown user

I have Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-53-386, GNU/Linux

I have NIS client 3.15-3Ubuntu3 working on a Ubuntu Workstation
I have NIS server 3.15-3Ubuntu3 working on a Ubuntu Server

1) "ypcat passwd" is showing all users passwords in NIS server.

ERROR 1:
2) "id %NISUSER%" says: "id: %NISUSER%: unknown user"

How can I solve this?

QUESTION:

I find it difficult to explain myself: I want after a reboot, the Workstation most ask for a username and password. I want to be able to provide my username and password of a user of the server instead of a user of the workstation, and after that, I will be able to see my home directory (and some shares/ or what ever they are called in Linux). If I am a member of the group ICT, I want to be able to see the ICT share and have a desktopicon that is linked to the share.

I am used to Windows NT 4.0 (lets all point at me and laugh) with Windows NT server, workstation and a NT domain. Currently I have a Ubuntu Server which runs a samba server, so my Windows XP workstations can logon a NT domain of the samba server. But I want Linux Ubuntu Workstations.

If somebody would tell me what I am doing wrong, please do.

Here's my /etc/nsswitch.conf:

Code:
# /etc/nsswitch.conf
#
# Example configuration of GNU Name Service Switch functionality.
# If you have the `glibc-doc' and `info' packages installed, try:
# `info libc "Name Service Switch"' for information about this file.

passwd: compat
group: compat
shadow: compat

hosts: files dns mdns
networks: files

protocols: db files
services: db files
ethers: db files
rpc: db files

netgroup: nis
Please help, I am totaly lost.

I am sorry, I don't understand:
Which files do I need to modify?

passwd is a command right? Am I supposed to type in console: passwd compat nis? Could you please be more specific?
Thanx for your reply.

You need to edit /etc/nsswitch.conf file and add nis at the column :
Code:
# /etc/nsswitch.conf
#
# Example configuration of GNU Name Service Switch functionality.
# If you have the `glibc-doc' and `info' packages installed, try:
# `info libc "Name Service Switch"' for information about this file.

passwd: compat nis
group: compat nis
shadow: compat nis

hosts: files dns mdns
networks: files

protocols: db files
services: db files
ethers: db files
rpc: db files

netgroup: nis
