Welcome to LQ! VBox? btw, 'port forwarding' like 22 works for nat.
Yes, you found the 'secret': bridged or host-only

Check VBox File->Prefs(^g)->Net->Host-only *tab*

"invalid settings detected" there in VBox?
Old version bug that you must reset -every- time!

On guest, check: ip r; ip a|grep -w inet
Do you see 192.168.56.101?

Maybe CentOS6 ?firewall? blocks ping (Idk, sorry)
netstat -tpln #Look for 22; putty ssh to guest

Post 'complete details' Best wishes! (you're doing good so far!)

p.s. oh, RHEL6 Probably VMWare Idk... (LQanti$ware will say $free CentOS7)

Oh! dhcp not working, maybe because of that VBox bug?
Did you ever see 10.0.2.15 w/NAT? (my above post just edited!)

What's 'under' (click on error icon) VBoxMgr(?) "invalid settings detected"???
(M$Win ctrl-alt-PrtSc, click on error, to paste into M$Paint; LQ 'Go Advanced' to get paperclip to attach pic)

What version of VBox?
How exactly did you 'login'? putty=ssh w/NAT PortForwarding?
What does 'now-broken' bridged say? (guest gets dhcp IP from same ISP*router* as M$Win8Host)
Could it be that RH6guest dhcp didn't re-lease after Win8laptopHost slept?

edit ninja... Sounds like VBox bug. Laptop slept? vbox or $vmWare? Bug:
MUST re-enter VBox File->Prefs(^g)->Net->Host-only *tab* 'Adapter' IP&mask info EVERY time!
Click on error: what does it say? See attached pic! Let us know!!!
