How to migrate email server from shared hosting to Linux VPS

Hi Guys,

I have a wordpress site on shared hosting which I want to migrate to my Ubuntu 11.10 VPS having nginx, mysql and php

So far I have successfully migrated my complete wordpress site to VPS, next I want to migrate my complete email server (all my emails etc.) from shared hosting to VPS. From my shared hosting I got a 'mail' directory which contains all my email ids, emails, other info etc., now I want to all this to work on my new VPS also

To access e-mail on my shared hosting (having cpanel), I visit: http://MyDomain.com/webmail and use roundcube to read my mails

I know that I have to install an email server on my vps but which one should I go with: dovecot, carrier or anything else for easy migration; apart form this what else do I need to install
and how can I migrate my full email server from shared hosting to vps

Please help me out

Thanks a lot

Well, I can't be entirely sure about this, but I'd do it somewhat like this:
- install everything you need for mail on the new server (same as what you use now), e.g. exim/postfix for smtp, dovecot/cyrus for delivery, mysql/postgres (if you use DB), roundcube, openssl/gnutls, apache/nginx for roundcube — everything involved with mail;
- copy config directories and fix config files if there are any differences (paths, interfaces, etc); import database if needed;
- add another MX record with higher priority;
- test it;
- shutdown old server if everything is okay.

You might want to do it in three steps and check them as you go: MTA, MDA, web-interface.

Please tell if you'll be able to migrate successfully, I'm actually quite curious.
