How to check the health/status of tomcat

We are running multiple web servers (Apache) with tomcat6 running. The O/S is RHEL6 and the hardware is HP. I have access to the logs and would like to know which logs I should be reviewing to check the "health" of my servers and what errors I should be on the lookout for? I know this is a really generic question, but our number of network folks has recently been reduced and I am trying to pick up the slack until we have sufficient manpower again. Thanks in advance.
