how can I understand send_mail mechanism?

Hi,

I'm trying to use php's mail() function on my dedicated server (debian lenny). But I can't find thorough information as to how to make it work.

some talk about php.ini -> sendmail_path
some say i need to hosts.conf, also dns in resolv.conf, some talk about httpd.conf, let alone setting it with an email/password authentication.

Is there anyone who can tell me the logic/workflow of this process and how can I get it running?

Thanks,
