Having gnome on ubuntu server

I have installed ubuntu server and for some reasons I want to have the gnome GUI. I read in this topic how to do that, however my main concern is installation of unnecessary applications like openoffice, sound, media players, and ...

When I run
Code:
sudo apt-get insatll ubuntu-desktop
I see a lot of other softwares that are going to be installed (the total 420 MB will be downloaded).

How can I install gnome and gdm alone?

you cannot safely do that. (that's the downside of having a gui on the server.. a lot of stuff is going to be installed, using your hardware resources)
Gnome is a huge package, by default... and depending on how Cononical has compiled it, you must install some odd (non gnome) dependencies too, which makes you frown in wonder... but alas.. it's required for that version of gnome to work.

that's why most servers don't have such desktop envirnoments installed.

I think it is possible to have ubuntu-desktop without evolution (since evolution is an application that need the ubuntu-desktop). In other words, if someone want to have evolution, then is it meaningful to install ubuntu-desktop first. But why ubuntu-desktopn depends on evolution?
