HAL, and fstab, I want my old fstab back

Hello and thanks in advance for any help you might be.

Question: How do I get back my old fstab and where is there info on HAL?

Background: I have been working with Unix for several years now, mainly under Sun Solaris and SGI IRIX. I have been tasked to build several RHEL ASE 4 Dell boxes. I installed the first and looked at the fstab file and it reads total Greek to me. It has LABELS and strange device names. I was looking for the std. /dev/sda1 and I got /dev/VolGroup_ID/LogVol2 devices. I have no clue which physical device that is. I notice this when I did a df -h and saw the same strange info

1. For now how do I convert everything to normal.
2. Since I'm sure this isn't going away where can I find howto info on it? I did some web searches and only found high level information not command information.

Thank you,

On the quick you can have a look here about fstab and lvm:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/lvm2.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...ap=8#doc_chap1

I know it's gentoo doc's but they are generally pretty good.
There is also some stuff about hal at gentoo wikis.

You should note that this is normal for Red Hat and other distros, but noting is stopping you from converting if desired. here's a sample, but I'm not suing logical volume groups;

Code:
LABEL=/                 /                       ext3    defaults        1 1
LABEL=/boot             /boot                   ext3    defaults        1 2
becomes;
Code:
/dev/sda2               /                       ext3    defaults        1 1
/dev/sda1               /boot                   ext3    defaults        1 2
Look into parted, gparted, tune2fs and e2label man pages.
