Are you sure virtusertable.db is up to date?
You didn't mention your distro, but usually virtusertable and virtusertable.db are located under /etc/mail.
So verify with sendmail.cf the correct location of virtusertable and then run:
Does case matter?
Setting up an upper- or mixed-case user in qmail doesn't work because qmail lowers the case of all incoming usernames.
Is that also the way it works in sendmail?
(This is how qmail manages case insensitivity in email addresses, but the actual definition of the user on the server must be in lower case)
OK, I'm an idiot on this one. Yes, virtusertable.db was up to date, but I didn't restart sendmail after doing so. When I restarted sendmail, virtusertable addresses worked fine. Duh! Negative points for me, but thanks for playing!
