ftp problem

The last days i have trouble logging through ftp, since i get:

kostis@linux:~> ftp gemma.uio.no
Connected to gemma.uio.no.
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection.
ftp>

which is strange because last week everything was working fine...
Which of the two computers has the problem????

However, sftp logs in but i dont know how to download a directory
The commands: wget -r mget dont work to sftp
Does anyone know the right commands???

Thanx a lot!

By the sound of things the ftp server is not running. You need to log in via ssh or what ever control panel you use and check to see if it is running:

ssh command would be:
ps aux | grep ftp

Depending on the Linux version yu may need to restart the service.

for getting multiple files with ftp try:

mget <partofname>*
where <partofname> is the beginning (or end with the * at the front) of the file you want.

konstaka 11785 0.0 0.0 2.47M 240K pts/1 S + 22:37:45 0:00.01 grep ftp

kostis@linux:~> ps aux | grep ftp
kostis 16881 0.0 0.1 2728 676 pts/1 S+ 00:15 0:00 grep ftp
