font configuraton in RHEL 5.4

Dear All,

I have few doubts regarding fonts configuration in RHEL 5.4.

Code:
[vinay@linuxcoe4 fonts]$ cd /usr/share/X11/fonts
[vinay@linuxcoe4 fonts]$ ls
100dpi 75dpi encodings misc TTF Type1 util
[vinay@linuxcoe4 fonts]$ cd /usr/share/fonts/
[vinay@linuxcoe4 fonts]$ ls
bitmap-fonts bitstream-vera default dejavu-lgc liberation
What is the difference between fonts in /usr/share/X11/fonts and /usr/share/fonts

Also there is no fonts.dir file, which describes fonts under a specific fonts directory in /usr/share/fonts tree.

But we can find fonts.dir or fonts.scale file under /usr/share/X11/fonts/ tree. Does files under /usr/share/fonts tree are not dependent on fonts.dir ?

Thanks in advance...

Not much help, may be, just the observations, I have done.

rpm -qf /usr/share/X11/fonts/
xorg-x11-font-utils-7.1-2
xorg-x11-fonts-misc-7.1-2.1.el5
xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-75dpi-7.1-2.1.el5
xorg-x11-fonts-100dpi-7.1-2.1.el5
xorg-x11-fonts-75dpi-7.1-2.1.el5
xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-100dpi-7.1-2.1.el5
xorg-x11-fonts-Type1-7.1-2.1.el5
xorg-x11-fonts-truetype-7.1-2.1.el5
xorg-x11-fonts-base-7.1-2.1.el5
→ → As you can see, xorg-x11 fonts only.

rpm -qf /usr/share/fonts
fontconfig-2.4.1-7.el5

' /usr/share/fonts/ ' : Here you will install ( or copy )
all ( extra ) fonts ( fonts.ttf ) used by applications, e.g.
Firefox and OpenOfficeOrg, and the fonts will be available in
those just by a restart of the application.
.....
