First Serious Attempt at Server - Ubuntu 14.04 Storage, Then Mail, Then Web
I am moving forward with a long delayed plan. A few years ago, I got my hands on a Sun System 40 Workstation. I have used it with Windows and Ubuntu at different times. Last year I changed the system board. Since Windows 8.1 is not compatible, I have decided to proceed with making it a Linux server.
My plan is to first use it as an internal server for backup and media. My next goal will be to use it as a mailserver, and finally an all out webserver for at least one of my business domains.
I have downloaded 14.04 LTS. I am looking at a lovely black screen. I tried to install ownCloud, but gave up on that until I got expert guidance.

So here I am, experts. Guide me - please?
Switch the screen on?
Or:
Downloading alone is not sufficient. You also need to install it.
Seriously, without a little more information it's hard to help. What happens during installation? Is the system accessible on the network (ping)? Perhaps you didn't set up graphics? Is anything displayed on console when you switch the system off and on again? Anything at all, like boot ROM messages?
How to Install Owncloud on Ubuntu 14.04 & Configure SSL
Thank you for the response. I did not know the post went through. I typed it, sent it, and did not see it. I thought that perhaps my attempt to customize the font caused the system to reject it.
Anyway, I found a good series of tutorials from a Bing search on YouTube. I provide the links to the installation and SSL configuration segments here and in the reposted question thread. They got me up and running. Yay!
Note - I had problems with the wget for the Owncloud tar archive, but from my many attempts, one of them resulted in a tar file awaiting activation. Also, although this is for version 7 of Owncloud, everything worked perfectly with 8.04, the latest stable version.
