failover in linux


hi everyone

i have 2 linux (RH 6.1) servers in my debug env..

i want to configure failover between them for an application (oracle on my case - but not using oracle methods it could be anything else for that matter)

im having trouble finding out how to do it.. anyone can help?

Depending on how data is set up you could use HA-cluster which can be setup with RedHat Cluster Suite. If you have a service plan with Red Hat they will actually help you set it up. They have a huge knowledge base for clusters. Also here is a link to a pretty good guide for ha-lvm cluster on red hat.

There are alternatives to RH Cluster Suite , such as HP's Serviceguard for Linux. There is a license fee for the product and support plus a cost for the Oracle toolkit. Its a very mature product that has an impressive heritage from its HP-UX background (where it is often used to cluster Oracle DBs). Similar to RH, HP can provide cluster consultancy services. Another alternative are community based options, such as DRBD.

If you're already covered by a RH subscription then Cluster Suite would make sense. Maybe other clustering solutions are used elsewhere in your company so you already have some knowledge locally you can leverage.
