Unhappy Domain users can't log on to NAS share

I have a bit of a strange one here. I have a RH4 domain controller. There are a number of, dare I say it, Windows XP client domain users connecting to the server. I have recently setup another RH4 server that has a bunch of storage attached(simulated NAS). The storage is shared via NFS or SAMBA to the DC. I need to figure out how to get the domain users migrated to the nas. If I try to connect to the NFS share on the nas from a windows client (Windows services for Unix), I have to use the root user and password to do so. Even then since the existing directories only have rights set for the owner, I can't browse into the directories. The NFS share has "no_root_squash" as an option in the exports file.

Basically what I am looking for is how to have an "Active Directory" senario without adding all this to Active Directory. I don't care to go down that rabbit hole at this time. A few people have been throwing out LDAP as a solution. RedHat indicated they have some sort of directory manager software (approx. $5000) that "should" solve my problem. This appears to be all LDAP based anyway. I saw a little blurp on NIS thinking that may help.

I can't believe that this isn't common place. Attaching NAS storage to a DC and allowing the domain users to connect to the NAS logging in as themselves.

Sorry for the rant. Our house is fairly new to Linux and I am having to learn by the seat of my pants. I have been messing around with this for a couple of weeks and need to come to some conclusion.

Thanks
