out of the initial install image. I am not sure myself what CentOS or Scientific Linux ships with?
So lets see.

Why upgrade CentOS from the stock 3.10.x kernel to a newer 3.17.x kernel

Looks newer to me. Grabbed the above from

You should just be fine installing CentOS 7 or Scientific Linux 7 I would think. Newer Kernels than Ubuntu 12.04 mean better hardware support in my experience. Especially on newer gear. I run a 4.1 kernel on my Dell 755 server which is older
than your server but I was OK from kernel 3.13 when I first installed. I just upgraded as I went along. My 2 kernels now are 3.19 and 4.1. I seem to remember kernel 4.0 had a ext4 file system bug in it or something.
Give it a try and see. I never read Dells site when I got my free 3 Dell Servers. I just booted some live pen drives and went all medieval on them. With no worries what so ever.
