create ftp server and assign read and write permissions

Hi,

we have home filesystem where user1 (user1:chemistry) has home dir as :/home/chemistry/user1
and user2 (user2hysics) has home dir as : /home/physics/dir2

we want to create ftp location in /home where user1 will have read and write access but user 2 will have only read access and both will be authenticated using password. How we can do that..Can we declare /home/ftp_dir as the ftp directory? as this dir is sub-directory and we want that only ftp_dir should be accessible and not the directories that are one parent to ftp_dir.

You don't say what version/distro of Linux, what FTP server, the environment or provide any details, so it's hard to say. ProFTPD has a different set of options from vsftpd, and both can do what you'd like.
