adding the "-" did work, but now i have a new error,
Code:
named[3072]: starting BIND 9.5.1-P2 -u bind -t /var/lib/named
named[3072]: found 1 CPU, using 1 worker thread
named[3072]: using up to 4096 sockets
named[3072]: loading configuration from '/etc/bind/named.conf'
named[3072]: none:0: open: /etc/bind/named.conf: permission denied
named[3072]: loading configuration: permission denied
named[3072]: exiting (due to fatal error)
[ 157.631203] type=1503 audit(1258092689.564:11): operation=inode_permission" requested_mask"r::" denied_mask"r::" fsuid=111 name="/var/lib/named/etc/bind/named.conf" pid=3073 profile="/usr/sbin/named"
im guessing this means that some file that the BIND9 program needs to access isnt either made, or it doesnt have the propper permission, like its not owned by it or something. thanks again for your help
EDIT:
is there any books or PDF's on DNS, and how it really works and how to set it up in a generic linux install? just wondering

Reason: forgot to ask this question too
This is an apparmor problem. Take a look at post #5 here to see how you fix it.
Regarding bind documentation, there is plenty, just google for it. You can start by reading this howto for bind on Ubuntu.
