Apache http server - error: C compiler cannot create executables
I'm a linux newb, and don't know a lot yet, so pardon my ignorance. I'm trying to install the Apache http server. Here's the error I get after I do "./configure --prefix=***":
Code:
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
configure failed for srclib/apr
I managed to get the gcc stuff by experimenting with apt-get, but I don't know what to do with this one. This appears to be the only error.
Well, as I said, I'm still a bit of a linux newb, and I first used apt-get only like a week or two ago. I don't really know how to use it or exactly what it does. I have a few tabs open about it now so I can learn more. What command would I use to install Apache using apt-get?
You really should read the man pages (e.g. "man apt-get"), or the documentation available on the Debian website (such as this). I'm assuming you use Debian (or some derivative, since you're using apt-get) and you should put your distribution in your profile. To install Apache via apt-get, you'll probably need to run something like "apt-get install apache" or maybe "apt-get install httpd". I can't tell you which, since the Debian packages website appears to be down right now. Actually, it's probably easier if you find Synaptic in your menu (can't remember exactly where, haven't used Debian for a while), which is a graphical front-end for APT. You'll be able to search for Apache and install it that way.
