I have a amanda backup software installed in debian server and i wanted to upgrade my amanda server software from "Amanda version 2.5.2p1" to latest one which is 3.3.0 stagble version. How do i upgrade amanda backup server software, is there any steps available for the amanda backup software upgrade. i google for the steps but not get any information for amanda software upgrade. need your help to upgrade my server.
There have been a lot of changes from 2.5.2p1 to 2.6 and then 3 on up to 3.3. Especially if you are going from source or packages from Zmanda, you should have a look at http://wiki.zmanda.com/man/amanda-compatibility.7.html. Details will depend on the complexity of your setup. If you are backing up a single server to disk, then it won't be as complicated as if you are backing up dozens of different kinds of servers with a tape library, etc.
i dont know exactly that how the amanda backup software in installed in the machine but when i am checking with the "aptitude show amanda-server" it shows me all the packages installed of amanda backup server. so i guess it was installed through a aptitude command. please let me know how do i upgrade the server.
The links which you have suggected to me is already checked by me but i am confident as how to execute the task.

Could you answer the other questions? What version of Debian? How many machines you are backing up? How is your Amanda configured? Apparently, you didn't do the original install?
If you are used to aptitude and do everything that way, then it is easiest to upgrade using aptitude. But, you will be limited to the most recent version of Amanda that has been packaged for your release of Debian. Amanda has been stable for a long time, so you ought to be good with whatever version aptitude can come up with.
However, if there are features in the newer releases of Amanda that you want, and they aren't available from aptitude, then you will have to go to Zmanda and download either source or a package from there and follow their directions. Back up your Amanda configuration before starting. Afterwards, you will need to see that the new install has that configuration, but there will be some things that have changed, so you will have to read through the documentation on changes. Of course, any added features you want to use will require changing the configuration as well.
Actualy i have not installed Amanda and have not sonfigured. i just have to upgrade it in lates version. i have Debian lenny 2.6.26-2-amd64 OS installed in machine. i googled for this issue and found some of the repository where i can get the package of amanda-server_3.2.1 but not able to update on server through "aptitude upgrade command. do you know the repository where can i able to upgrade it directly through aptitude command. please check the repository information from where i am trying to upgrade the package.
Probably a new package can be built with :
1) # apt-get build-dep amanda
1a) # apt-get install fakeroot libglib2.0-dev curl libcurl4-openssl-dev
2) apt-get -b source amanda=1:3.2.1-1.1
Install / update : # dpkg -i amanda-server*
..

Can i use a debian Squeeze repository to install updated version of amanda in my Debian lenny server?
So can i directly install this package on my debian lenny machine to upgrade it?
The procedure which you told me on post-6 is not executing it shows me an error below
"root@debian:/home# apt-get build-dep amanda

The easy way to update : 1) su
2)
dpkg -i amanda-common_3.2.1-1.1_amd64.deb amanda-server_3.2.1-1.1_amd64.deb
.. And please advise, if you also need "amanda-client_3.2.1-1.1_amd64.deb"
..
Assumes : Read post # 6 another time ..
Building a package with $ apt-get -b source amanda=1:3.2.1-1.1 :
Add a line to /etc/apt/sources.list : deb src <url> wheezy main
.. where <url> can be identical to the 'lenny <url>'.
Run # apt-get update && exit
Create a new empty folder in /home/<name>/ ; cd <new-folder>/ ;
Download the three source files with $ wget <file-url> , like
wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool..._3.2.1-1.1.dsc
wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool....1.orig.tar.gz
wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool....1-1.1.diff.gz
Next, and again as unprivileged user :
apt-get -b source amanda=1:3.2.1-1.1
There may be some pitfalls, downloading the files beforehand
to <new-folder/ helps things go smooth.

Two methods : 1) Add "source" in Synaptic > Settings > Archives.
Or 2)
Enable the "deb src <url> lenny ..." text lines in /etc/apt/sources.list ,
by deleting the hash mark ( # ), that is the fist character in the line.
