a closed news (nntp) server as a discussion board

Hi

I've been toying with the idea of setting up something for our office to have announcements and product related discussions rather than the present deluge of e-mail and reply.

some have suggested that I should start a phpbb but as I happen to like the some of client side features in older news browsers (heck, even Thunderbird does ok and we all have that at my office) I thought that perhaps "news" would be a better choice.

So my question is two fold.

1) do you think that news is "old technology" and best avoided in favour of browser based solutions

2) do you know any suggestions or 'how to' to help me set this up on some linux (say redhat) server inside our firewall that won't go outside the firewall?

thanks

Well, that's one way to do it, but it does have drawbacks. Having to fire up another client, subscribe to the group, download new stuff, etc., is kind of a pain. Plus, you're adding another service to your server, with another open port, and all that's associated with it.

Everybody's got a web browser, and probably has them open most of the day. Easy to shove out new content, provide files, pictures, whatever, with none of the other hassles. And if you get sick of PHPBB, you can just use something else...as long as the page address doesn't change, they clients still get the content....
