[solved] SSHFS fails to connect after years of faithful service

There are two computers and they are both dual-boot with linux distros. For several years, possibly ten, sshfs was successfully used to connect them, and then, about a month ago, something went sideways.

Firewalls are disabled, and each distro has a static ip: 192.168.10.11-16.
Typical terminal command: sshfs 192.168.10.14:/media/Wren /media/Remote
Result, system hangs until it times out.
Most common debug output:
ssh: connect to host 192.168.10.1X port 22: Connection timed out
read: Connection reset by peer

Computer 1 LMDE/Cinnamon does not connect Computer 2 Mint/xfce
Computer 2 Mint/xfce connects Computer 1 LMDE/Cinnamon

Computer 1 Mint/Mate does not connect Computer 2 Mint/xfce
Computer 2 Mint/xfce does not connect Computer 1 Mint/Mate

Computer 1 Mint/Mate connected Computer 2 MX/xfce once, then failed
Debug output:
ssh: connect to host 192.168.10.14 port 22: Connection refused
read: Connection reset by peer
Computer 2 MX/xfce does not connect Computer 1 Mint/Mate

Computer 1 LMDE/Cinnamon does not connect Computer 2 MX/xfce
Computer 2 MX/xfce connects Computer 1 LMDE/Cinnamon

syslogs show:
May 27 12:08:38 Magpie systemd[1]: media-Remote.mount: Succeeded.
May 27 12:08:38 Magpie systemd[906]: media-Remote.mount: Succeeded.

Have tried to no effect:
ssh-keygen -f "/home/mike/.ssh/known_hosts" -R "192.168.10.1X"

Have purged and reinstalled ssh and sshfs in Mint/Mate.
Have tried ssh:// ... in Caja and Nemo to no effect, host could not be found.
Have pinged successfully in several directions.
Samba is installed in MX only, and certainly not setup. Some Samba support files are installed as part of the default installations.

Is ssh running on both computers and what port is it listening to?
Check with netstat

Can you ssh on the same computer to itself? ssh localhost

ssh is installed but not running until sshfs launches it. pids for sshfs and ssh are killed when the connection times out. netstat does not show ssh on Computer 1 Mint/Mate until sshfs runs, the line is: tcp 0 1 Magpie:51666 192.168.10.14:ssh SYN_SENT. 192.168.10.14 is correct for Computer 2 MX/xfce, which was running.

ssh localhost creates localhost:ssh, which shows in netstat.

Same results with Computer 2 Mint/xfce. MX doesn't have netstat, but otherwise the same result on Computer 2 MX/xfce.

sshfs is a fuse filesystem that uses sftp as the underlying protocol and sftp is a subsystem of ssh. For computer 1 to connect to computer 2 ssh has to running on computer 2. If you can login on computer 2 using ssh i.e. ssh localhost that would confirm ssh is working. If you can login on computer 2 ssh computer-2-ip_address on computer 2 then most likely the problem is with computer 1 assuming the firewalls are really disabled.

Is ssh actually listening to port 22

Correction: sshd has to be running on computer 2 (and you use the ssh utility on computer 1 to connect to it).

So:
  • the connection is unidirectional: 1 uses ssh to connect to 2, which runs the sshd daemon (and I'm pretty sure it cannot be started on demand)
  • if you want bidirectional, I guess that would be possible if you implement the above in opposite directions, but usually that's not necessary

I found it difficult to separate relevant from irrelevant information in post #1, and I suspect the relevant info was incomplete.
I would like to ascertain in which direction the connection is supposed to go.
Then I would like to ascertain that ssh is actually working in that direction (something in post #1 seems to point to the culprit being ssh itself, not sshfs).

I'm on the verge of solving this, but I'll respond to your comments first. I have been able to login on both computers with both ssh localhost and ssh local-ip-address. And, every indication is that ssh is listening to port 22.

And then, you wrote "assuming the firewalls are really disabled". I assumed that too because I know that's an issue and I specifically disabled firewalls in each dist. Nevertheless, I checked it again and the firewalls were back on both computers. As you can imagine I was disgusted, I still am.

When I get back to this tomorrow I'll check the firewalls again to see if they are back. Then I'll drive a stake in their black hearts.

Thanks for your help, with any luck this is over, I'll let you know.

That explains why I've seen sshd listed in 'top'.

I understand that the connection is unidirectional. In the process of trying to isolate the issue I tried the connection in one direction and then the other. And, I'm sure that relevant info is missing. If I knew what was relevant I'd be in better shape from the start.

^ As I wrote, let's ascertain that ssh is working in the desired direction.

Assuming the target machine (computer 2 in my previous post) is called "server", and the user "user", issue the following on computer 1, and show us:
Code:
ssh -vvv user@server

Also, in the SSHFS client, the LogLevel (-v) option for the SSH client can be passed to SSH / SFTP via SSHFS via the -o option, or the FUSE debugging can be activated with -d:

Code:
sshfs -d 192.168.10.14:/media/Wren /media/Remote
sshfs -o "debug" 192.168.10.14:/media/Wren /media/Remote

sshfs -o "debug,LogLevel=DEBUG1" 192.168.10.14:/media/Wren /media/Remote

The root issue was that the Mint distros were configured to enable ufw at boot, and ufw then became active. When I had stopped ufw I had not actually disabled it, that takes 'sudo systemctl disable ufw'. Now 'sudo systemctl status ufw' shows the status is 'inactive (dead)', and it doesn't change on boot.

That doesn't explain why ufw stayed out of the way for years and seemingly spontaneously became active. My only guess is the major upgrade released just after the first of the year, which I applied in March.

Thanks again for your help,
Mike
