What is a "user session inhibitor"

I upgraded this laptop Ubuntu 22.04.

I have come to expect teething problems with a new system.

Below is a problem I have never had before. How can I change this behaviour?

Quote:
pedro@pedro-512ssd:~$ shutdown now
Operation inhibited by "pedro" (PID 2757 "gnome-session-b", user pedro), reason is "user session inhibited".
Please retry operation after closing inhibitors and logging out other users.
Alternatively, ignore inhibitors and users with 'systemctl poweroff -i'.
pedro@pedro-512ssd:~$
Normally, I do an update from the command line, then just use shutdown now to switch off.

Didn't work today!

Looks like this webpage has a good description of how to solve the problem: https://sleeplessbeastie.eu/2022/01/...nhibitor-lock/

Seems straight-forward enough.

For background see the informative link from ntubski

Thanks for the link, very informative.

I think this behaviour is fairly new. I have often shutdown the laptop with other windows open, but I never got this message before!

For example, I have Libre Office documents open. LO just recovers them the next time I start LO

Must be Ubuntu 22.04 default behaviour.

The use may be new, but it's been available for ages. I looked into it a while back to protect backups from powerdown/hibernate.
