VPN for Peer-to-Peer

Greetings

Is it possible to protect the communication between two peer-to-peer applications using VPN? If yes, what are the VPN protocols used in this environment?

I think that is the VPN for. To protect communications as if there were on private network.

Here is a good link for VPN http://findvpn.com/

Sorry, My query was unclear. I know that VPN is to protect communications done over the Internet.

If you consider a IPSec implementation, it needs to have information about the hosts to which it sends protected traffic. My query is..what if I want to send traffic to a random IP address of which I have no prior knowledge..I know that using Opportunistic Encryption this problem could be sorted out.

Typically, p2p applications communicate with unknown peers and do not have prior information about them. Apart from Opportunistic Encryption, are there any other VPN implementations for p2p ?
