If you don't mind a GUI solution, consider Fruho (https://fruho.com/).

I always found Strongswan easy but it DOES require a knowledge of the "ipsec pki" and "openssl" command line tools.

A VPN to be used how? Do you wish to connect to the internet via a VPN or connect to a LAN via a VPN? They're very different things.

I think you need to read up on what a VPN is and what it does because that makes no sense.

What do you want to do? What you want to do may not even involve a VPN.

Just so that we're all talking from the same page, are you wanting to set up your own VPN on a server, or are you wanting to connect to someone else's VPN that already exists?

Good question, the answer is use one that already exists.

Now I may be under a misconception here, does it help to provide a anonymity? Is ita good to twhart hacking? I'm thinking of financial transactions for one. I guess the VPN provider can see everything anyway?

not really. But it again depends on what do you mean by everything.
VPN is used to connect 2 PCs to each other and the network traffic between them will be protected. (usually a client like you and the host of the VPN provider). But if you want to go further (to your bank for example) the line will not be protected (by your VPN). But in such cases the software of the bank should be secure enough to protect the communication.
But if you need more/other information do not hesitate, ask.

Most VPN providers will let you know what services they provide and, also, tend to provide instructions or applications for you to connect to their VPN.
I use one myself but have an open question asking about the risks of using it all the time.
