A friend who runs a internet café asked me if I could set up a couple of dedicated CS-servers. Is there anything in particular I should have in mind on what sort of services I can shut down to secure it (without making it unstable and such)? I dont know if he has got a firewall or not (so I plan the config. with not having a firewall on the network). All thoughts/links are welcome.
You might want to check out Firewall Builder for an easy to use graphical tool to build iptables. There are other tools that do the same thing, search on Freshmeat for firewall. I would block all ports except those required for CS and open SSH only to a specific local IP, for remote management.
TheOther1 is right: you need to block all ports except those required for CS (27010 and 27015).
For my own, I've used IPCOP distro for firewalling/gateway purpose and put the server in LAN. And I do port forwarding to be accessible by others from internet...
Another thing is to use strong password for things like adminmod or amxmod... and if you can authenticate yourself with your WON (or steam) ID.
