i Forgot the exact combination of my password, in reference to the last three characters, i think i used the CAPS lock for the last 3...please help me, as i have had to install Mandriva lx 3 times, for this reason, but more as i do not remember the text line commands, so i had to reinstall it after every upgrade, as when you upgrade Mandriva Lx it reconfigures the network connections and in some occasions , default back to the GRUB RECOVERY COMMAND LINE PROMPT, WHICH I DOnT KNOW "ANY MORE", SHROOT--BASH EXIT..lol see, i wouldn't have a BLOODY clue. :_P i used to use Mandrake and redhat8 back in 2002/ so treat me as a newbie although i am X-MENSA, so i can follow exact commands and succeed if prompted in a precise and exact fashion!

is there a simple GUI Linux app that can recover the or reconfigure the ROOT password or how do you recover it please?

there is no way to recover lost passwords, but you can find some links at the bottom of the page (under similar threads). I'm sure you will find pretty usable tips there.

"e" EDIT OF grub OPTION, SO I FOLLOWED ITS PROMPTING, GOT IN TO THE mbr? THE BIT WRITTEN IN php?? THAT CHOOSE ms-dos ELSE MANDRIVA ..

BUT THERE IS NO WORD THAT SAYS PASSWORD OR PASSWD TO ADD THE VALUE OF "1" TO, which is the case in Editing the password in RED-HAT,
although MANDRIVA is based on KDE// so they should be similar,

please provide me with the code or prompt command lines to access the reconfiguration of my ROOT password, i do have my normal user password, a& its configured only for 1 group member...me+the ROOT access.

i did not give myself root access under my normal user name so i don't stumble the system apps up...boy do i have egg,

oh i pressed "TAB" which give you a hell of alot of basic scripts or command prompts, there is "password legacy","password" , etc however i need to add the correct argument,, such as ,
"password change root/ or
edit password user...lol

i think i might have to add a line to the grub boot up thingy, right ?? as i cant56 access the ROOT terminal inside Mandriva, without 1st entering a root password!....lol bloody ground hog day, all over again people! $ME anyway... :_)

Your posts are somewhat difficult to follow, but I can tell you one thing: If you're looking for some way to perform a password recovery from the grub prompt, you won't find it.

You can tell grub (or any other bootloader) to pass the "single" or "S" parameter to the kernel, which will cause most distributions to boot to single-user mode. This mode is useful for performing various maintenance tasks, but you may still need the root password in order to log in.

As long as you have access to the physical machine, password recovery can be done in several ways. If single-user mode doesn't work for you, you will have to boot from a Live CD/DVD/USB stick of some sort (depending on the distribution in question, sometimes the install media can be used). You can then mount the root partition of your Linux installation, which will give you full access to every file on the system.

Once you've done that, you can reset the password in several ways. Here are two examples:

1. chroot to the mounted directory and change the password with passwd.
2. Edit the /etc/shadow file and replace the password hash with the hash of a known password, for instance the hash associated with your other account.

A quick Google search will turn up a multitude of articles detailing the exact procedure. Like this one.

ok where do i put the "1" in Grub for MANDRIVA LX, pretty please, i have read all comments, they all say simular things, however none actually say exactly where for the mndriva LX grub boot thingy...

there is no "password " or "passwr" written anywhere in grub file of : madriva lx

You were told what to do in post #4...AGAIN, there is not a way to do this in grub, at all, ever, and there never has been.
