I'm getting DSL for my desktop. I'm also getting a D-Link DI-604 router that does stateful packet inspection to use as a firewall between my box and the DSL modem. I'm not running any servers or wireless, or doing anything more complicated than surfing the internet, sending and receiving emails. No file-sharing.
Currently with my dialup I use Guarddog to set my rules for IPtables. Will I still need Guarddog, or will it create a conflict with the hardware router firewall?

You really don't need guarddog anymore with the router but the more security you can add the better. The 604 wired only or does it have wireless as well. If it is wireless I would run guarddog just for that added bit of protection.
Thanks, Brian. The router is not for wireless.
I'm happy to keep Guarddog running because I like the concept of multi-layered security. I just wondered if it would cause a conflict.
Usually it shouldn't as long as the firewall is properly configured. I would actually recommend running a host based firewall even with a packet-filtering router, as I've noticed that a number manufacturers can exceptionally slow in releasing updated firmware for known vulns. So layered defense approach is probably a wise choice.
I'd consider IPcop if I had room for another box, but I just don't.
I think I got everything pretty well set up. The Actiontec modem the phone company provided turned out to have a nice configurable firewall and I'm using Guarddog, too. So thanks to everybody who chimed in.
