Problem with Filter and Ethereal

I'm trying to get it to not grab anything on the AOL protocol or anything on the ICMP protocol.

Why is it picking it up as a port number?
Invalid capture filter: "not port 22 and not port 110 and not port 25 and not AOL and not ICMP"!

That string is not a valid capture filter (unknown port 'AOL').
See the help for a description of the capture filter syntax.

I am trying to capture AOL messages but cann't seem to on my network. I guessing cause all computers are connected to a linksys router then to the gateway? So traffic doesn't bounce off the router to the linux machine? Is there anyway way around this other then having the computers I want to capture go though the linux machine?

In order to capture traffic on your network from a laptop you need to see layer 2. In order to do this configure your cable or DSL router to hit a hub before the switch. Cable router => hub => linksys router. Now plug into the hub and run your favorite tool ie. ettercap -G, start sniffing for passwords etc. If you want to sniff traffic with ethereal and filter traffic try using tethereal. Ethereal will not allow you to use display filters to filter on capture. Try this: tethereal -i eth0 -f (what ever you want to sniff). Hope this helps
