Possible to store programs in memory?

Hello,

I was reading one of my books and it talked about storing programs in memory. By using a tmpfs mount one could store applications in /dev/shm. Ive googled this topic and can find nothing helpful. The reason for this would be to hide the applications after a reboot because in effect, they will be deleted since they are volatile.

If anyone could give me some insight on this or even some links, i would appreciate it.

Cheers,

Stakhous

It's mostly a waste of space because most filesystems in Linux don't do XIP (execute in place) right now, so you end up with 2 copies of the executable in memory.
