PAM, SFTP, and encrypted home directories

Is there a way to fiddle with the configurations of PAM and OpenSSH server on Ubuntu so that it is possible to use an encryped home directory with chrooted SFTP? Without PAM, it seems not possible unless one logs in first via SSH and unlocks the directory. That defeats the purpose of chrooted SFTP. Would dragging PAM into the question allow chrooted SFTP to access an encrypted home?
