In there, at the bottom of the file is a section where you can add:
XSESSION="kde-3.3.1"
This will then boot KDE by default
Add yourself a user (Not a good idea to stay root) with:
useradd graeme -m -G users,audio,wheel,games,portage -s /bin/bash
passwd graeme
passwd root
