I don't know if this is pertinent at all, or if it will shed any light on the situation, but I caught my computer mysteriously downloading something from the same server; sb.l.google.com and managed to capture the entire thing in wireshark.

It's apparently something in GZip format, but I don't know how to transform the raw packet stream into something I can examine.

If I posted this, what output from wireshark would you want? A hexdump, raw, or something else?

I don't even use linux, I'm on Macintosh, so I apologize if I leave something unclear or mess up somewhere. I just found this thread by searching for "sb.l.google.com" trying to find out what the nature of this download is.

Before you start doing any reverse engineering, do you have the google safebrowsing anti-phishing extension for firefox?:

http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/safebrowsing/
http://wiki.mozilla.org/Phishing_Protection

If you're not sure, type in the address about:config and look for the key browser.safebrowsing.enabled
