I have a linux ,and read the forum on bypassing the password .Here is what I have tried.1. I waited to the lilu promt, then I typed linux single ,it continued to boot and asked for log in and password .2 tried a different approach at the lilu prompt I type in linux init=/bin/bash worked like a charm ,then I got the # prompt so I typed in passwd which worked like a charm ,then I was prompted to type in new password and so here is where my problem is when I get to this point the key board doesnt work it stops responding and the caps light comes on and off when pressed but no other keys work other than the enter key .I tried pressing and holding ctrl but doesnt work ,DOES ANYONE HAVE A SUGGESTION OR A FIX FOR MY PROBLEM TO HELP ME RESET THE PASSWORD . please email me at [EMAIL ADDRESS REMOVED BY MODERATOR] with help if you can .Thanks in advance !
// metaldetectingva, having help take place in the public forum is fundamental to sites like LQ. Please don't attempt to get email support here, as it deprives other members of the LQ community from any potential gains in knowledge they would have otherwise enjoyed. --win32sux

Backtrack can reset windows passwords, I'm sure it can do it to linux too, although I'm not familiar with the method.
EDIT:Just re-read the original post, *nix OS's don't star out the password when you type it in through the console. Just type it from memory and it'll work.

isn't that because it promts you a password?
password is not shown while it is entered so you may think keyboard died(i had same problem when i was a newbie).
you can boot from livecd & mount your drive and either chroot there and passwd or create a new password using openssl passwd -1 your_pass and copy it by hand, replacing root password in your mounted etc/shadow(not recommended).
