Login problems???

Hi everyone,

I am having a lot of problems getting logged in under a multiuser login, at command line or at X when i type the username and press enter it says login incorrect and doesn't get to the stage of letting me enter a password, i can get in a single user login and i know the root password but i need to get in under multiuser to get access to the network resources.

Any help would be much appreciated!

hmm...something's def. not right.

the login should never shoot you back before entering the passwd...this is considered a security hole since someone could then figure out what usernames DO exist on the system.

Is this a fresh install? If not, what did you do (upgrade? installation of something? incorrect reboot?) before this happened?

also, which distro is this?

:edit:
this is unclear:
can you login as root under the multiuser login?

or can you only get in through a single boot?

is loopback starting?

check on the boot to see if it brings up lo
login as a standalone user and type

ifconfig (in case you missed it at boot)

if nothing shows then something is up
try typing ifconfig lo up
then ifconfig again if something shows up your halfway there

now if you see lo then that should end all your problems just vi /etc/rc.d/<something here like local> and add

ifconfig lo up

at the end, this will make sure lo comes up before you try to login

save the file and restart and all should be cured.

If your still having problems with lo then try re-compiling your kernel and add loopback support in the network optionsy bit
