"iptables: No chain/target/match by that name" error

I'm trying to create iptables with shorewall and also firestarter but for each i get the error:

iptables: No chain/target/match by that name

I've recompiled the kernel many times with every iptables module configured into it that i can find. Am I missing something? if so what? i'm using Gentoo kernel 2.6.9

That message is usually associated with a syntax error or a missing module. Post the rule so that we can verify the syntax is correct, as well as the output of lsmod. Also people often experience similar problems when they statically compile iptables the iptables modules into the kernel rather than compiling them as loadable modules.
