iptables and ftp

how would I allow ftp and other services through my iptables firewall rules. What is the syntax that I would need to use under IPTABLES?

Are you forwarding the traffic into a LAN or are you running the ftp service locally?

$IPTABLES -A INPUT -i $OUTSIDE -d 0/0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT

where $outside if your external ethernet card and 21 is your destination port. this will allow traffic from outside into your firewall.

Is the FTP server on your firewall machine? or on another PC in your network?
