If you have a network with no access to the outside world, all your own devices and no external access, where exactly would a threat come from? What do you need protection against?

You are actually right, there is no reason to use any firewall or similar tools in this case (probably).
As a theoretical question you still need to protect your system against threats coming from usb drives. Or disable usb completely.
