Post How to skip authentication for system updates?

Hi I'm using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and every time I search for updates it ask for authentication. I'd like to search and apply updates without confirmation. Is it possible in some manner?

Thanks, Paolo

There's a reason that it's asking for authentication. Are you the only user?

I too don't think applying updates without doing any authentication is a good idea at all. It shouldn't be a burden on your system or take any extra time that you might notice.

Nevertheless, to do so You should look into sudo mechanism, which can delegate permissions to some user's.

HowTO: Sudoers Configuration [AT] ubuntuforums.org
Sudoers [AT] help.ubuntu.com

After applying policy like:

user_name ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/apt-get update, /usr/bin/apt-get upgrade -y --force-yes

The user_name should be able to update and upgrade the system from the console without askpass using:
Code:
user@host:~#  sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y --force-yes

You should at least take the time to see what will be upgraded or installed on your system.

Kin regards
