How to access files in ~/.Private Ununtu 12.04

A while back I set up an encrypted directory using
Code:
sudo apt-get install ecryptfs-utils
but when I cd into ~/.Private and do an ls command I don't see the files but some strings starting with ECRYPTFS_FNEK_ENCRYPTED... I guess that is the encrypted version of the files, but how do I actually view the files that are in that directory?

The link you provided doesn't talk about how I would go about decrypting the home directory so I can view the files in human readable form.

Ah, yes, it does, in a number of different ways...

Are you refering to the section 6 ie Recovering Your Data Manually? Which begins with
Quote:
These steps should only be required in unusual, or emergency circumstances, when you must manually mount your encrypted ~/Private directory to recover your data.
If so, then why does it say "unusual" and "emergency circumstances"? I just want to see what I have in that directory, which is not "unusual" or an "emergency", so I am a little confused?

I thought that was the situation you were in...

If it's all operating properly, just look in ~/Private then - that's where the unencrypted versions are supposed to be mounted.

Hmm, that's strange, I don't have a ~/Private directory but I do have ~/.Private somehow.

Then I guess you are in an unusual, or emergency circumstance.
Proceed accordingly
