If you don't want anyone but the root user to be able to read /root, open a terminal, and type this:
su
chmod 700 /root
This will set the permissions so the owner of the directory (in this case, the root user) can read, write, and execute from the directory (that's what the 7 is for), users in the group that owns the directory can't read, write, or execute (the first 0), and everyone else can't do anything with it either (the second 0).
