deny direct linking

I want to set up my web server so people cannot view/download files unless they click a link through an html or php page, (like mysite/largefile.tar.gz would not work, but going to the main page and downloading it from there would work fine).

How exactly does that work? I don't need a full out how-to, just a basic "how that works" and I can go from there.

Searching LQ/the web for anti-leech or deeplinking should turn up some methods/scripts.
BTW, I do not think this is a security or related issue.
