I was right, tried another install of PCLinuxOS Xfce 'mini' 2016.07, but this time I pinned gnome-themes-standard (3.x, take note of the version) and the adwaita icon theme (which I despise) BEFORE doing the bare bones install updates, sure enough, it totally trashed the install, which means even in Xfce, Gnome 3 is forced on you and bastardizes your Xfce install. Now I know what KILLED my MATE install. F*** you Gnome cabal, I will NEVER like or use your garbage. Have a nice life PCLinuxOS, you're no longer relevant.

You can remove it just like SystemD...

Actually, not really, it has become a DEPENDENCY of many other apps, it will get dragged in eventually. PCLinuxOS has made it a critical dependency of the entire system (it's a CORE update). Besides, that's way too much work, which it shouldn't have to be. This IS systemd all over again, but now it's a gtk GUI war, sad, really sad.

Can everyone please stop with the unwanted Devuan propaganda (and lies).

OK, you're right about it being the wrong thread, for that I apologize.

But the lies part, wow, just wow. I left MS products completely 7 years ago because of their similar behaviour to RH. I don't like any suspicious software shoved down my throat, GPL or not (systemd is bloated, secretive, BUGGY, in a perpetual state of beta and wants far too much control of my machine, when they added networking, that was the last straw). Where was your zealousness when the systemd propaganda machine was in full swing and invading almost every other distribution like a nasty virus? Developers are being FORCED to write their GUIs and apps AROUND systemd, does that sound like FREEDOM to you?

Devuan is now my main OS on my machine after PCLOS took a dump (they are struggling with gtk because of systemd, actually, trying to stay systemd free), and it works just fine, actually it's quite stable, and I don't feel like a Poettering Borg member when I'm using it.

I am just a home enthusiast, but I do understand IT, if I was running a server farm, there's no way in hell I would let systemd near any of the machines. Lennart should write his own distro (or kernel, systemd is a wannabe kernel), instead of trying to control everybody else. You see, Lennart wants to be Linus, but he can't, because he's just not that good (he couldn't write his own actual kernel if his life depended on it), so he leg rides other software (remember pulse audio?) with bloated garbage. I've done my research and made and intelligent, INFORMED decision, not blindly follow the mob mentality because of emotions and a false sense of belonging.

It's getting harder and harder to find anything that's Gnome and/or systemd agnostic, that's not freedom, that's being backed in to a corner with bloated, buggy and ugly software. The Gnome/systemd cabal owns you.

I did a live trial of antiX 16 64 full, it was actually pretty cool, I even installed and switched to Xfce 'on the fly', as in the same live session. Thanks for pointing me in their direction. Everybody and every distro have their own agenda, Devuan can upgrade directly from a Debian Wheezy install (that was high on their to-do list, which they accomplished), I highly doubt antiX can do that. Devuan wants to be a stable and long-term alternative to Debian (even on servers), while antiX is very cool, experimental, etc. AntiX could also be just a flash in the pan (time will tell). Personally, I'm way past my distro hopping days, I will spend countless hours researching and fixing a current install as opposed to wiping the drive and installing the same or something else. That being said, I bare metal install distros that suit my needs, longevity and the 3rd party apps they support. AntiX has a dog's breakfast of repository options, the odds and risk of creating a 'mess' are greater than just enabling Devuan's dedicated backport temporarily to get something I need. I'm NOT knocking antiX, it's a great distro, I'm just being realistic, I want to use my computer, not spend hours trying to figure out what broke what and reversing the damage, that's too much like Windows, which I completely dumped 7 years ago.

How long (time wise) is a flash in the pan? antiX has been releasing to the public since 2007, and it actually started out in 2006 as Flepis.

It's still relevant.

CORRECTION: AntiX is definitely NOT a "flash in the pan". AntiX been active for over a decade. I would know because it is my favorite GNU/Linux distro.

I am using a version of Debian 10 with gnome DE (bad, really bad, comparing to my previous experience with gnome and debian's), called Polilinux, in a brazilian Vaio laptop (cr@py). This is my catharsis ;-)
