YUM Syntax?

I'm trying to use yum to install my packages but I must be doing something wrong.. No matter what package i try to install i get the message"

"Cannot find a package matching synaptic-0.48.2-2.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm
No actions to take" (replace synaptic with the name of the package)

This happens with EVEY package i have tried to install so far..

Im typing in the terminal (logged in as root) "yum install (packagename)"..

Thanks in advance!!

what you did was entirely correct.

The message is basically telling you that synaptic was not found in the YUM repositories.

With fedora you have

fedora-updates
fedore-core

and something else.

You can add additional repositories to gain access to additional software.

You do this in your /etc/yum.conf file.

Do a search for how to do this.

You will have to download and install the package yourself. You can find rpms from http://rpm.pbone.net/

Click on Advanced and you can select only your distribution to search for.
