Hi,
I'm a total newb to Linux - installed Mandrake 10.0 yesterday.
I've managed to configure all my hardware and got a net connection up and running (I did my research before installing) but I'm running into problems with the messenger program.
Kopete (sp?) messenger that comes with Mandrake won't let me setup a Yahoo account. It keeps telling me that my password is wrong, even though it isn't (changed password etc etc) so I had a look at downloading Yahoo messenger for Linux... they don't offer a download specifically for Mandrake - only Redhat, FreeBSD and Debian.
Question is; will one of these work under Mandrake? If so, which one?
Ironically, Kopete has setup an MSN messenger profile for me no problem...
Just download one and try it. I have used the RedHat ymessenger with Mandrake and Suse and it works fine. If the one you download doesn't work then just uninstall it and try another one.
I too am very new to this Linux and am running on Mandrake 10.0 I have learned the answer to this though! Just open a Konsole and type "gaim" (without the quotes). That should open up GAIM onto your desktop. Then, all you do is setup your Yahoo account, as well as AOL IM, and MSN IM (if you have those 2) Look me up on yahoo under jmill_1@sbcglobal.net (my email as well as yahoo ID) Or on MSN as jmill_1.
I too use Mandrake 10 and Kopete. The reason behind the Yahoo! authentication failures is because Yahoo! has recently upraded messenger, along with their servers. The authentication method Kopete uses is no longer update enough to use Yahoo!'s current authentication procedures. I've sent them e-mail after e-mail, but they seem to ignore me.
29/06/2004 - Yahoo fix available
Yahoo now works again. If you are unable to login to Yahoo, get an updated kdenetwork package from your distribution. Currently, Gentoo and SUSE Linux users in the normal ways. If your distribution hasn't updated yet, you may obtain the source code from the KDE 3.2 branch of CVS; see the instructions in the 'CVS Access' link at right.

10/07/2004 - Kopete 0.8.4 Released
This is a hotfix update for the Yahoo and ICQ protocol problems that many of our users have been experiencing recently. There are a few things to note about this release though: 1. This will only compile and work with KDE 3.2. Compatibility with KDE 3.1 is neither implied or guaranteed. 2. You should install the RPMs that came with your distro first. 3. You must install this tarball over your current installation of Kopete or you will have problems. When you run the configure script, here's the recommended command for getting it right:"./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix`"
maybe they ignored you because they had fixed the isuue
thanks for the info about gaim doing yahoo as well detpenguin i thought it was only aim client
Originally posted by stuart i just tried gaim, IMHO this program kills kopete to use so i would say go for that one my opinion of course
Hi I downloaded gaim 0.79 and when I install it they ask me gtk++2.4.4
*** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK+ is incorrectly installed.
configure: error:
*** GTK+ 2.0 is required to build Gaim; please make sure you have the GTK+
*** development headers installed. The latest version of GTK+ is
*** always available at http://www.gtk.org/.
Whe i install the GTK++2.4.4 and ask me glib 2.4.0 I alredy installed the glib2.4.4 Here's the error below
onfigure: error: Library requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.4.0 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.4.0) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.
