XFree86 DRI Missing on Display: 0.0 & MESAGL instead of OpenGL

I've probably asked this a few times before but unfortunately haven't gotten succifient help to solve the problem.

I've changed distros (from Mandrake 10 OE to Red Hat 9) and it's the same problem

When I type "fglrxinfo"

It says XFree86-DRI missing on display:0.0 and it says my 3D accelerator is MesaGL instead of OpenGL.

I'm using XFree 4.3.0 for my ATI Radeon 9600XT--kernel 2.4.x. I've tried updating my kernal numerous times but every attempt resulted in a fiasco.

Can someone please take a few seconds to tell me exactly how I can rectify this problem and not point me to a HOWTO as I know what to do and have done it...this is the outcome.

Thanks in advance
